I have been researching the the name TOMES, as a hobby, for some years now, but only discovered this site a few days ago.
I can only though, at the moment offer rather negative information on your Frederick TOMES.
Birth. I have a complete listings of all TOMES birth/marriage/death listing for England & Waled from 1837 (when they started) to 1999. There is though no birth registered for a Frederick TOMES (with that spelling) in 1849. However not unusual as in those days some 10/15% of births were just not registered. A Frederick TOMES was though baptised in Swanage, Dorset, England on 27 May 1849, but I don't know what became of him. Do you have any clues as to where he came from?
Marriage. I assume he married Henrietta CHAPMAN before he/they went to the USA. There are several Frederick TOMES marriages registered before 1887, vis 1864 (London), 1872 (near Manchester - might be him), 1882 (London), 1885 & 1886 (both Hampshire) - but I don't have details of whom they married. Any clues on where/when he married?
Apart from the above he does not appear (curious) anyway on the 1881 UK Census (not under the spelling TOMES anyway).
Can you add any more facts to what was in your message? Do you know if he was just Frederick or had more than one first name?
Yours Ian Tomes (Somerset, England)
