I am English (and live in England!) and have been researching TOMES family history for some years now. From what you say in your message I would be certain that you are related to the 'Detroit TOMES.' In fact your pedigree traces back to England with a James TOMES & his wife Charlotte (nee PHIPPS)emigrating to Canada in about 1852 from Gloucestershire county in central England. Before that, I am fairly sure your Pedigree can be traced back to a George TOMS/TOMES (born about 1757 in the village of Chipping Campden, also in Gloucestershire).
If one regards George at the first identified generation of your family, then you are of the 9th Generation.
I will try and send you a short email to say I have posted this message.
Incidentally, the Jolene Kelly Pillars, who has posted messages after yours, is also of your family.
Ian Tomes (in Somerset, South West England)
