I'm a Tomes and understood the name to have come from Tompson (tom's son). I was born in Birmingham UK, and Tomes is a name to be found in the Stratford on Avon area of the UK. A relative suggested that this version came into being about the time of William Shakespear. I would certainly be interested to know of German or Czech versions of the name.
