Leonidas Leroy Tombaugh
Posted by: Brad Tombaugh (ID *****0879) Date: April 21, 2006 at 20:19:44

at the end of Chapter 5 of the "Tombaugh History" is a "stray" note that reads:

"Leodias (sic) Leroy Tombaugh, son of George Tombaugh, has one son, Paul Everett, born March 12, 1909. His wife’s maiden name was Ella Ray Lockwood."

The George Tombaugh in Chapter 5, however, died in 1822, so there is too long of a date span before the grandson Paul is born...

I found some information on a "Leonidas Leroy Tombaugh" in Furnas County, Nebraska, that seems to match this stray note, except for the wife's last name:

"Leonidas Leroy Tombaugh, married Ella Rae Warren, Furnas Co. NE 2 MAY 1906."

and also this:

Buried in Wilsonville Cemetery, Furnas Co. NE
Tombaugh - Ella Rae - 1870 - 1963
Tombaugh - Leonidas L. - 1864 - 1937
Tombaugh - Paul E. - 1909 - 1967

These dates seem consistent, and seem to fit with the "Leroy" Tombaugh, son of George Tombaugh and Harriet Colvin. This George was a descendant of Matthias Tombaugh in Chapter 9:

"Leroy Tombaugh is the third child of George and Harriet Tombaugh. He was born in Washington County, Pa., and with others of his family moved in early life to Illinois, and later to Nebraska, where he still lives, near Lebanon, of that State. He is married, his wife’s name being Ella, and they have one son, now attending college."

Given the common Germanic custom of using one's middle name, I'm presuming that Leonidas Leroy and this Leroy are one and the same...

Does anyone have any more information on this that would corroborate or refute this?
