DNA testing on George Tombaugh line?
Has anyone done any dna testing on the line back through George Tombaugh ?
The chain I have down from George Tombaugh is:
George Tombaugh (1761 - 1822 Somerset Washington Co. PA)
Sarah Tombaugh (1801 PA -1885 OH) m. George Myers
If no DNA testing has been done on this line, to do it right, we need a 37 marker y-dna test done through Family Tree DNA (biggest databank).(You can get a group discount price if you start a group when you join.) It would test back along the direct paternal line from father to his father to his father, etc., through George Tombaugh and back many hundreds of years ago. It's the kind of test where you just swab the inside of your cheek.See FAQ on familytreedna.com.
Do you know of a possible test subject who is (1) a male (2) having the Tombaugh surname and (3) descended from George Tombaugh?A female Tombaugh descendant can recruit her male Tombaugh-surname brother, father, uncle or cousin, etc., to do the test since she doesn't carry the y-dna.
It could help us trace back through George's reported father, Jacob Marcus Tombaugh (1735-1778), and his grandfather, the immigrant ancestor John Jacob Tombaugh Sr. (c. 1698 Prussia - 1758 Lancaster Co. PA).It could confirm and extend the previous research done on George's father and grandfather and then jump back across the pond to find earlier ancestors.
It could also determine which of the Tombaugh and other spelling-variation lines are related, and which aren't -- both on this side and on the other side of the pond.
Some of these spelling-variation lines are so hard to untangle and link up that dna is probably the only way to get them authoritatively straightened out.
Also, another $15 could run the results through the Genographic project of National Geographic and Family Tree DNA and get some fascinating information on deep ancestral
origins.
I'd be happy to share in the cost, and probably others would as well.
