b. 1818 Maury Co., Middle TN
s/o William Tom (soldier under Andrew Jackson)
maternal uncle John Files was a soldier under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812 and was killed 01/08/1815 at the Battle of New Orleans
His GreatGrandfather was killed in 1776 by Tories in S. Carolina during the Rev. War
He came to TX with his dad/William and stepmother/Kissiah and his sibs in 1835.
He was the oldest of 5 children by Williams 1st wife Mary Files, 2nd Charles, 3rd Alfred, 4th James and 5th Sarah
Children of William/Kissiah: Hughes, Caroline & William
John and his dad joined Austin to fight Gen. Cos at San Antonio.
When John was 17 he joined Capt. W.W. Hill's company at the Battle of San Jacinto, under Bob Stephenson
Moved to Guadalupe Co. 1846
Elected Sheriff of the Co. 1856
Moved to Atascosa Co. 1862
