Rachel, Yes we appear to be cousins over a distance. Your James's father George Senior T (1815-1880)who married Maria Goldsbrough in 1840 (she died in Tasmania in 1896?) and my GG grandfather Robert Henry T (1819-1888)were brothers, two of at least seven children of James T (1788/9-1849) and Mary Senior (1794-1838)who were married in 1814. I have a large oil portrait of James, our mutual forebear. He established the firm of James Tolson & Sons, Kirkheaton, manufacturers of fancy waistcoatings in the early days of steam power and prospered, building 'Greenhead' his house in Dalton. (Now I think divided into apartments).
According to my record your GG grandfather James and Mary had 7 children - Mary Frances,m. John Snell; Alice, m. Herbert Collier; James d.1907? having served in the Boer War; Francis Frederick d. 1897?; Ethel, m. Leslie Davidson; Edith Mabel and Hilda, both unmarried in 1907? Which of these is your G grandparent?
My brother, David, knows more about the Tolsons in Australia having visited some of the places they lived.
There is more information if you would like to be in touch.
Regards Cousin, Jonathan.
