Benjamin Hewitt Tolman I's History will hopefully be published in Fall 2007. As many of you know, Benjamin is a younger brother to Judson and Cyrus. He was born 3 May 1829 in Maine, but after marrying Sarah Jane Angell (Truman O. Angell's oldest daughter) and 3 children later he died when he was only 28 years old on 14 Dec 1857 in Tremonton, Utah. We don't know where he was burried. Does anyone know where he is?? Because he was so young we don't have too much history for him. If you have any quotes in family records about him or have any information (journals, pictures, histories, etc.), please let me know!!
After Benjamin I's death, Sarah Jane moved in with her father along with her children, Polly Jane, Emma Mariah and Benjamin II. I descend from his son, Benjamin II, and no one knows of any diaries or journals for Benjamin I. Our assumption is that a majority of his belongings went with one of the daughter's descendents. We have tried to contact them. Polly Jane married Samuel Wickersham Woolley and lived in Tooele, Utah; we have not heard back from anyone from that family. Emma Mariah married William Edward Hyde and lived in Monticello, San Juan County, Utah. I contacted one of her descendents, and he directed me to a relative of Emma's granddaughter's husband's family. This granddaugther, Leona Jean Walton, daughter of Emma Louise Hyde, was said to be the genealogist for the family. Her huband, Alvin M. Bailey, passed the things onto a Doyle (sp?) Bailey. I just emailed a submitter from Pedigree Resource File who has sent a lot of information on the Bailey family. No response as of yet. Many letters were mailed to any Woolleys in Tooele and Hydes in Monticello, and any other addresses that the Family Organization has. Only one other response, and it was a jewel! We now have a picture of Emma Mariah with her children and also one of her holding a quilt, other things came with these photos.
Because Truman O. Angell was an avid journal writer, we went to the FHLibrary to look for any mention of Benjamin I in one of his journals. We found a journal that seemed condensed from another journal, it did list Benjamin I's name a date or two. Currently we are looking for other journals or diary's from Truman.
One more avenue that we are researching is through some library history books. We have "The Saga of San Juan," "Our Pioneer Heritage," "Heart Throbs of the West," and "Tooele County History Book." Are there any other books we should look for?
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks...
