I have recorded Assisted Immigration records to New Zealand for Margery Toughill (28), a housemaid of Derry, arrived on SS Waikato (sailed 5 May 1877) to Canterbury (a Province) Have found no trace of her, but was not looking for Toughills at the time. Her fare fully paid by Government under schemes then in force.

Also Margaret Toughill (24) and Mary A Toughill, both of Derry, general servants, arrived together on SS Opawa 25 October 1880, having been nominated by Margery Toughill of Tuam Street, East, Christchurch.

My great uncle John Tohill (Spelled Toughill) and (probably his brother) Michael also spelled Toughill both labourers from Derry arrived together on the SS Aorangi, 11 May 1884. John came to join his brother, Henry (my grandfather) in Alexandra, New Zealand, but died 1 June 1885, aged 38 and is buried there. Seemingly Michael did not remain and possibly returned to Ireland.

I have listed all the Tohills from early NZ Electoral Rolls, but was not particulary looking for Toughills.

Henry had another brother who came to NZ, namely Daniel who was spelled Toghill in immigratin records. He died a batchelor in Alexanadra. A sister was Mary [sic] who also came and married James Gartly in Alexandra. Another sister, Bridget, also ocame to New Zealand and seemd to have lived only in my city of Dunedin, dying in 1924 unmarried.

I have written a booklet about all the Tohills who came to New Zealand.

Please keep me informed and let me know where you live.
