Yours is the first message reply. I'm an American working in Italy. My father was an imigrant and I am still very close to relatives here. It seems every week I learn something new about the family. Although, it seems there is a lot of missing history when it comes to the origins. I'm sure there is probably some serious geneology books with it all detailed out.
I know a little bit about where the Togneri's migrated to in Italy. A few years ago I spoke to someomne via email who said the Togneri clan was originally from Pisa. The clan splintered into to 2 groups. One went to Milan and the other to the Garfigana region (Barga is a part of Garfignana). I still have lots of family in that region. My cousin last year went through the church records and tracked my lineage back to the 17th century where a great,great... grandparent came from Milan. So i'm assuming the splintered group theory is probably correct.
Although, i'm not too sure how reliable that source of info. (via email) was because he sent a supposed family crest which I discovered later to be the symbol of the region Coreglia Anteminelli. He said it was from a geneology service finding from the 30's. Probably the service just took the symbol of the region where there were many Togneri's.
The area of Barga and Garfiginana is full of Togneri's. It is a beautiful mountainous region just north of Lucca. People of the region are famous for forestry and carving intricate stone figurines. If you haven't seen the area you really should visit.
Hope this helped , good luck.
