I know that my mother-in-law's family originated from Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her grandfather, Robert Wright Fenton and his wife, Margaret Scott Fenton left from Glasgow, Scotland with their younger children and arrived in Quebec, Canada on June 12, 1911. According to the 1911 Canadian Census, they lived in St. Faustin, Terrebonne, Quebec, Canada. Robert and Margaret stayed in Canada until their deaths. Margaret's death certificate showed she lived at Pt. McNicoll, County of Simcoe, Canada with her husband when she died Feb. 28, 1934. According to his death certificate, Robert was living in Pt. McNicoll, County of Simcoe, Township of Tay, Province of Ontario, Canada when he died on June 6, 1934.
One of Robert's and Margaret's sons was named Alexander Fenton - my mother-in-law's father.
Alexander Fenton was living with his parents in Quebec in 1911, according to the 1911 Canadian Census, but he did not immigrate from Scotland with them. I am not sure if he arrived before them but in 1911 he was 26 years old so it's certainly possible he came alone before or just after them. In 1916 he served with the Canadian militia in WWI and returned to Canada. I don't know exactly when he moved from Canada to the U.S. as he traveled between the two countries for some time but he was married in NY in 1928 and was living in Larchmont, Westchester County, NY according to the 1930 US Federal Census.
My mother-in-law believes the veil came into the family's possession via her father or his parents, possibly in Canada, but doesn't know any details. Because my mother-in-law has had no contact with her father's siblings I'd have to agree that either he (Alexander Fenton) or his parents (Robert and Margaret Fenton) received it and passed it down to her.
I read somewhere that some of Mary Todd Lincoln's family could be related to a Todd family in Canada but haven't been able to pinpoint where or when and whether they are in fact related to Mary Todd.
If the veil did come into the family in Canada, then a rough timeframe of 1911 (when Robert Fenton came to Canada) to 1934 (when Robert died and by then Alexander had left Canada as well) is probably when it happened.
I'm not sure what other details I can provide. I do keep hoping my mother-in-law will remember something else but so far no, so any assistance anyone can provide with this mystery is greatly appreciated.
