The Horry Co. Todds are related to the McMurtrys as far back as 1650 to 1700. This makes me think that the father of the original William Todd of Horry Co. was a descendant of the marriage between a Todd and McMurtry in the Old World or upon arrival in the New World. It seems that the last remnants of this communion between the Todds and McMurtrys can be found in Abbeville, SC, in the 1790 Census. You have James Todd living three doors from William McMurtry and ten doors from Samuel McMurtry. We know that William Todd was born in SC in 1776 because all the Todds in Horry Co. are shown as born in SC in the 1850 Census except one. This could have been a son of Thomas L. Todd who married Edna Freeman of Robeson Co., NC. Thomas moved back to Robeson Co. and Joseph Jackson Todd got his wife Maranza Ann Byrd from Robeson Co., NC. His brother and his sister were both living in Robeson Co. at the time of Joseph's marriage. I know that the name Hannah was thrown around as being possibly the wife of the original William Todd of Horry Co. But, what if there was a Hannah McMurtry who married into the Todd family? Maybe that's where the given name comes into the oral history of the Todds.
