Not sure how much you know already, but in the 1860 census, Ada Todd, 26, born Kentucky, with her son Ralston Todd, age 1 b. MO, was living with her Ralston parents, Samuel 53 and Nancy 48, and siblings Samuel, age 19, James, age 10. Another brother William, age about 24 was not with the family in this census. All the children were born in Kentucky, except James who was born in Illinois.
It appears that Ada's Todd husband was dead, as on March 22 1865, in Adams County, a Mrs Ada J R Todd married Walter F. Evans.
In the 1850 census of Petersburg, Illinois, Ada was called Jane. It appears she switched names occasionally.
In 1870, in Crawford County, Ill, Jane Evans age 46 (she was 36) was alone- Walter not home at the time of the census. She had 2 boarders and also a William Ralston, age 15, b. Illinois. Not sure where he fits in- maybe a nephew.
Ralston Todd is living with his grandparents but his name ismuddled- he's down as Evans Ralston, age 11. Obviously with a first name of Ralston living with a family whose last name was Ralston- the census taken put down what made sense to him!
In 1880 Walter F. Evans, age 40 b. Wales/England and Jane Evans, age 45, are in Cook County, Chicago, with their daughter Ada, age 9, born DC.
Ralston Evans is in DC - age 21, working as a Clerk at the Treasury. Nearby was his Grandmother Nancy Ralston age 68 with her son James age 30, who was also a Clerk at the Treasury.
By 1900 Walter F. Evans appears to have died, and Ada J.R. Evans, age 66, b. May 1834 in Kentucky, was living in Ward 12, Chicago, with her daughter Ada F. Evans, age 26,b. Sept 1873 in DC. Ada said she had 4 children born, 2 living.
In 1900 Ralston Todd, b. June 1859 in MO with Ella, b. 1863 in DC and 7 children. They had been married 18 years, and Ella had 9 children born, 7 living. They were living in Chicago.
By 1910, it appears that Ada/Jane had died, and her daughter Ada, age 31 was living with a Muriel Singh? age 18 a niece. Ada was a music teacher.
By 1920 she had married a Douglas Sennott- b. NY.
By 1930 she was a widow, living in Chicago with another widow as her Lodger.
Do you have Ralston's Death certificate? Quite often parents are listed on Death certicates.
