from Eling, Southamptonshire, England > Phila., PA
As I stated within one of my previous postings (July 8, 2007, which I posted to Cheryl, in regards to the information I had on her family, that being of Mary Todd (Lincoln) line, I believed that my Todd family (from Eling, England to Phila, PA - that being my Joseph, the son of John b. 1610, having gone to Phila.), that I had previously found some Todd records in regards to William Penn. (They were records of Bucks Co., which is where my Joseph Todd was, and Bucks Co. "is the oldest county in Pennsylvania.")
As I also previously stated, many of the Eling, England Todds either owned their own ships, or were Captains of ships, and John b. 1610 and his brother Joseph, were both commissiond by London to sail to Bermuda and protect it for England. (while they were trying to colonize Bermuda.) John and Joseph were both officers in the "Bermuda Company".
"Another" reason I believe the Todd records I found regarding William Penn were of Todds from Eling, England (some of them going to Bermuda, and my Joseph going to Philadelphia), is the following.:
(You will notice below, Sarah Griffin, who married into this Todd line, and it states this about her:
"Sarah could trace her line back to her great grandfather, William Buckman, WHO EMIGRATED FROM ENGLAND WITH WILLIAM PENN ON PENN'S SHIP, THE "WELCOME” in 1682."
Ahhh, yes, I do believe the records I found regarding some Todds having to do with William Penn (Phila. records of Bucks, Co. / and also some ship records, etc. were indeed the Todds of Eling, England). Also the same Todds who were commissioned by London to sail to Bermuda, to protect it from Pirates, etc., and take care of town affairs.)

(regarding Eling, England Todd migration):

Migration to North Carolina, around 1787
....the Owen families had land in Wilkes County, NC and had already settled in when several of the Thornton families decided to move south.
...Records show that several families joined the Thorntons during their migrations from Virginia to North Carolina to Kentucky and finally to Missouri. Early migrations of families tended to become a movement of clans that included members of several families.
During the Thornton family migration west there was a growing closeness between the various families that lived in the community. There were many romances started between William’s family and members of the other families who lived close to the Thorntons.
These early unions lasted a lifetime.
(* now enters the Eling, England > Phila, PA > NC > ...
Todd Family)
The Todd Family
The most important family connection with the Thorntons for more than 170 years was the Todd family.
Both the Thornton and Todd families were living in the western part of North Carolina in the last part of the eighteenth century. It is not known if they met with the Thornton family while the Todds lived in Rowan County 60 miles away, but future meetings would create some very close bonds.
The Todds had been in the United States for at least 100 years earlier.
The earliest Todd found (of this line) is John who was born around 1619 in Eling, Southamptonshire, England and married Elizabeth Mallory.
[John had a brother Joseph - they sailed to Bermuda to protect it for England, during the colonizing of Bermuda. They were commissioned by London to become officers of the "Bermuda Company". I have seen the actual records of their "Oath", in online records of Bermuda).
Most researchers state that John and Joseph were the sons of William Tod, of England. (some researchers also state that William Tod married Mary Tudor - who descended through the Tudor Dynasty line, i.e.: That being the King Henry (s) of England. She is within the line of Owen ap Tudor, where the Tudor Dynasty first began).]
John's son Joseph migrated to Pennsylvania in late seventeenth century (settled in Philadelphia) and died there in 1699.
[His will is on record in Phila, PA. Will was made in 1698, and was "proved in 1700". The will can be see online. The will is online, although I don' have the link to it by my side to share it.]
Joseph's direct line then progressed through
-Joseph Jr. (from 1st marriage, to Anne Worsham)
-(and these from 2nd marriage to Joanne Swift)
, JOSHUA (my line), and John, born about 1705.
John must have moved to Easton, Northampton County Pa in the early eighteenth century, where his son Benjamin was born in 1725.
Benjamin and his wife Sarah Griffin were married in 1750 and had nine children, all born in Easton, PA between 1752 and 1764.
Sarah could trace her line back to her great grandfather, William Buckman, WHO EMIGRATED FROM ENGLAND WITH WILLIAM PENN ON PENN'S SHIP, THE "WELCOME” in 1682.
From Pennsylvania, the Todds then migrated to Rowan County, North Carolina, where Benjamin and sons Caleb and Peter are on the 1772 tax roll.
When the Revolutionary War started four of the Todd boys participated.
Peter served in Captain Robert Moore’s North Carolina militia on an exhibition against Cherokee Indians. Joseph was a private in the militia in 1772.
Benjamin Jr. served 8 months in 1777 with Captain Davis’ Company as a private in the militia.
Thomas volunteered for 14 months in Captain David Cowan’s NC militia.
Close to the end of the Revolutionary War in 1781 Thomas served as a substitute for his brother Benjamin. He spent two more months as a private in Captain James Straig’s Company of Light horse under Col. Davis in the NC Troops.

* Peter Todd is the direct connection with the Thornton family.
In 1779, following his service in the War, he married Hannah Cornelison who was born in Loudoun County, Virginia. Peter was a wealthy landowner, with 150 acres on the south side of Lick Creek and 400 acres on the Abbott’s Creek, in a section of Rowan County that later became Davidson County. It was too far from Burke and Wilkes County for the Todds to be considered neighbors of the Thornton and Owen families.
While Peter and Hannah Todd lived in Rowan County, they had 8 children between 1780 and 1795:
Aaron in 1784, Mary “Polly” in 1786, Griffin in 1788, William in 1789, Anna in 1790, Jesse in 1792, Sally “Sallie” in 1793, Jeremiah in 1795, Hannah in 1798, and Spicey, 1800.
Even with all this activity in having children,
* the Todd family was preparing to move to Kentucky.
Migration to Kentucky
The first of the families to move to Kentucky was the Owen family. On September 12, 1793, Barnett and Frances sold 115 of their remaining acreage in Lunenburg and on December 14, 1798, sold 100 acres in Wilkes County. This sale of land continued as the Owen families prepare for their move to Kentucky in the early 1790s (Madison Co.)....
* The Todd families were also ready to migrate to Kentucky. On March 19, 1796, Benjamin Todd sold 525 acres of land in Rowan County. Records of sale of Peter’s land have not been found, but the Todd families migrated to Kentucky sometime between 1796 and 1799. By 1800 Peter and his family were listed in the Madison County, KY census.
(and migration continued)

This part I still need to verify.
If what this researcher stated is accurate, that William Tod (Tod) was the son of Owen Todd, b. abt. 1520, then this could be quite interesting, because Mary Tudor supposedly descends somehow from the line of Owen ap Tudor b. 1510 in Wales.
(where the Tudor Dynasty first began. i. e.: King Henry (s) of England, etc.)
"If" this is accurate, were Willam Tod (b. about 1570 England) and Mary Tudor, cousins ??
Robert Tudor b abt 1456
> son Owen ap Tudor 1510 Wales
> son Owen Todd b abt 1520
> son: (I need to very that William Tod (Todd) was the son of Owen Todd)
Willam Todd b 1570 m. (said by some to have married: Mary Tudor, who was within the Tudor Dynasty. i.e.: The King Henry (s) of England.)
> son: (I need to verify that John Todd, b. bef. 1610 England, was the son of William Tod (Todd) b. abt. 1570)
```````````
My line:
John Todd bef 1610 England (John, and his brother Joseph, were hired to go to Bermuda and be officers of the "Bermuda Company". John died there, and his will is on record in the records of Bermuda. The will is online.)
