The Multiple John Todds of NC, TN, & GA
Hi to the list,
I have some questions and observations about some of the John Todds that dot our landscape of genealogy.I have acquired some wills which I believe correct a misconception or two.
1) According to the will of John Todd died 1798 in Rowan County, North Carolina, he married Ann Brandon. They had 5 children at the time of his death with Ann being pregnant with child #6.The will also makes a provision for David Rutherford, John Todd's step-son. (A Rutherford family researcher states that Ann Brandon and James Rutherford had a child (David) out of wedlock.Because the Brandon & Rutherford families has money, they were able to keep David's name out of the "Bastardry Book".Named children of John & Ann Brandon Todd are:Nancy, Elizabeth, John Brandon, Mary, Thomas, & James. Some of the families marrying into this Todd line are:Dents, Trotts.
2) John Todd (m. Ann Brandon) was the son of John Sharp Todd ("The Histroy of Watauga County, North Carolina", by JP Arthur)and died in Rowan County. He is named in numerous documents as being John, Jr. so it is conceivable that his father had to be a JOHN.One other fact is that this John Todd known as John Todd, Jr. never left Rowan County, North Carolina.
3) Another John Todd is the son of Benjamin & Sarah Giffen/Griffen Todd.As far as I can determine this John Todd lived in Rowan County, NC and eventually moved to Georgia where he dies. Some genealogies that I have seen, have him married to a 1)Margaret Montgomery with 2 children, Levi & Benjamin; 2)Ann Brandon with no listing of any children.
4) In the DAR Patriot Index there is a John Todd listed as fighting for our independence. It lists him as being born around 1750 NC and dying 1819 in Georgia.Wives are: Sarah Giffen/Griffen and Margaret Erwin.
5) As near as I can figure out, John Sharp Todd (my line) and Benjamin Todd were brothers born in Pennsylvania.John S. Todd moved to Rowan County somewhere around 1750.He is listed in "Carolina Cradle" as being an early settler in the Jersey Settlement.Benjamin moved to Rowan County, NC later around 1770.And these brothers followed the tradition of naming their sons for their father, father-in-laws, etc.
Does anyone else see the problems with the dates and spouses as I do? It seems obvious to me that A)John Todd, Jr. s/o John S. Todd married Ann Brandon; B) died in 1796 in Rowan County, NC not in Georgia; C)had 6 biological children and 1 stepson.
Being human as we are, mistakes can be made and are made all the time. From the data that I have seen though, the mistakes for John Todd s/o Benjamin & Sarah Giffen/Griffen Todd are: A)He married his cousin's wife, Ann Brandon; B)married his mother, Sarah Giffen/Griffen; C)married his other cousin's wife, Margaret Erwin; D)married Margaret Montgomery (correct ?);E)died in Georgia in 1819 (correct?).
I am hoping that someone of John Todd s/o Benjamin & Sarah Giffin/Griffin Todd's descendant has information to back up the information that I have gathered. Please write to help me "see the light" or to confirm.Hoping to start some discussion.
Thanks so much,
Gwen
