Hello Gwendolyn, Many times I've looked at the Todd Genealogy page but never regonized a name until today.
Colonel Joe B. Todd is my Great-Great Grandfather.
My Great Grandfather is William G. Todd which is James P.
Todd's brother. This account is from a page in a book titled
"A History of Watagua County"
Col. Joe B. Todd was born September 2,1822 and died December 11, 1903. From the old Todd family Bible printed in
Edinborough by Mark and Charles Kerr 1791, it is learned that James Todd was born July 31, 1757 and Margaret Eriwn,
his wife ,October 14,1759 ; and that John Sharp Todd, father
of James was born December 11,1724, and his wife Nancy, was
born June 7, 1739. James Todd died November 17, 1814. He was a soldier of the Revolution.
Colonel Joe B. Todd's first wife was Caroline McGhee, born December 5, 1830 died September 1,1873. Two of their children are buried in the cemetery at Boone. Joe C.Todd Nov.8,1855 - Nov 1, 1858 and Maggie E. Todd July 7,1853 - Feb. 12, 1858. James Polk Todd, Mary Todd and William G.Todd survive him. Col. Joe's second wife was Mrs. Eliza Edmisten, widow of Harrison Edmisten, daughter of Mr. Dancy of Wilkes County.
Colonel Todd was a non-commissioned officer in the Mexican War, having first volunteered in Boone, but, there
being a delay calling volunteers, he went to Cabarrass County, joined a company there and went to Mexico, participating in several battles. He was colonel of the 98th
North Carolina militia.
He was a candidate for clerk of Superior Court in August,
1852, but was defeated by George M. Bingham, who, however,
resigned, owing to an impediment in his speech, and a young
lawyer named Clewell was appointed in his place. Upon Clewell's removal from Watauga, Col. Joe B. Todd was appointed by the court, and he was sent for in the night,
his residence then being in Dugger, now Penly Post Office.
He was first lieutenant in Company D of the 1st NC cavalry
in the Civil War, but resigned on account of heart disease
and returned home. He re-entered the service soon, however, joining the 37th NC Infantry. After the close of the war, he was elected clerk of the Superior Court and served till
the arrival of Judge J.L. Henry, when he was removed because
he could not take the iron-clad oath. He was elected to the
legislature in 1872, and then in 1882 to office of the clerk
of the Superior Court, which office he held for twelve years
after the close ofthe Civil War. With his ten years'
service before the Civil War, this makes the longest service
of anyone in this office in Watauga County. Colonel Todd was
highly esteemed by all. He was a fine sportsman, delighting
in hunting and fishing.
Gwendolyn when you study the dates of John Sharp and James , neither one of them could be Col. Joe's father.
From other information that I've gathered I think there is
another James Todd who was the son ofthe 1st James 1757-1814. He was married to a Ray, I have no other names.
My family tree from Colonel Joe B.Todd-
William G.Todd - John Carl Todd - Bunah Odell Todd-
John Charles Todd. I only have one Uncle who may be able to
shed more light on the search , I will see him this September.Hope you enjoy this information .I have a picture from a newspaper with Col.Joe and Jordon Councill
standing over a hunting trophy. If you have another e-mail
address I will try to copy and send to you. What relation
are we???Nice talking to you .JCT
