Thomas Todds of VA & MD (17th Century)
On 18 Aut. 1637 a Thomas Todd received a land patent of 250 acres in New Norfolk Co., VA on the south side of the east branch of the Elizabeth River, the land being a neck, 6 mines from the mouth of the entrance to said branch (Patent Book 1, page 457).The headrights included Thomas Todd himself and Elizabeth Todd, his wife. The references to Thomas Todd of New Norfolk Co./Lower Norfolk Co., VA, continued through 1647.
On 13 Sept. 1651 a Thomas Todd was a headright of Richard Grigson who received a land patent at Mockjack Bay, on the Est side of Pepper Creek, county unspecified (Patent Book 2, page 336-337).
On 29 Nov. 1652 a Thomas Tod was a headright of Robias Horton who received a land patent in Lancaster Co., VA (Patent Book 3, page 118).
Between 1652-1665, a Thomas Todd received several land patents in Gloucester Co., VA on Chestnut Creek at Morkjack Bay (Patent Book 3, pages 90, 182, 183 and Patent Book 5, page 410.It seems to be commonly accepted that this Thomas Todd is the Thomas Todd who married Anne Gorsuch and died in Baltimore Co., MD in 1678.
On 26 Sept. 1680 Thomas Todd received a land patent of 1084 acres in New Kent Co., VA on Peanketank Swamp, beginning near Sawher's Branch (Patent Book 7, page 50).From 1688-1696 it appears that this Thomas Todd "of Gloucester Co., VA," received land patents in New Kent Co., VA (before 1691) and in King & Queen Co., VA (after 1691) on the Mattapony River, adjacent to Stephen West, Goodrich and Indian Land.Another patent was adjacent to Giles Moddye and __?__ Campe. This latter land was originally granted to John West in 1682, assigned to Thomas Claybourne in 1683 and assigned by Claybourne to Thomas Todd the same day in 1683.I assume that this was Thomas Todd, Jr., the son of Thomas Todd who died in MD in 1678.This Thomas Todd is said to have married Elizabeth Bernard and died in MD or VA in 1725.
On 11 Jan 1715/1716 Thomas Todd "the younger, of Baltimore County, Maryland" wrote his will.It was probed in King & Queen Co., VA by William Todd (brother) of King & Queen Co., VA and and Jonathan Hide of Gloucester Co., VA, coexecutors in VA.This is said to Thomas Todd, III son of Thomas Todd, Jr., and grandson of Thomas Todd who died in MD in 1678.From the probate record of his will, it appears that his wife was Elizabeth __?__.
I am searching for comments on whether my assumptions above are correct. Also, was the Thomas Todd who was in New Norfolk/Lower Norfolk Co., VA in the 1630s-1640s, with a wife, Elizabeth, the same Thomas Todd who was later in Gloucester Co., VA and was married to Ann Gorsuch? If so, what was his first wife's, Elizabeth's, maiden name.some people say it was also Gorsuch, suggesting that he was married to sisters.
