I am the great great grandson of the Augustus L. Tobias you were posting about. My research has suggested he was actually from Beaufort SC originally, son of Isaac Tobias of Beaufort County. The family apparently was converted -- listed as Baptists in the register of the Beaufort Baptist Church. My (anecdotal) information suggests that Augustus L. was an executive in the South Carolina Insurance Company prior to the Civil War; he married Sophie St. Amand in Charleston (St. Pauls Cathedral) in 1850, and he served as a Captain in the Civil War (artillery) beginning sometime in October 1861. He died in 1879. Augustus L's third daughter, Leilah, married my great grandfather, Thomas B. Curtis, who appears to have come from Wadmalaw Island outside Charleston. They married in 1881, and eventually they settled (I believe when TB retired from the law) in Mt. Pleasant outside Charleston. Leilah lived until 1935, twenty-some years after TB Curtis died. Her youngest son, Augustus Tobias Curtis, was my grandfather, and I am named for him. Im looking for any additional information about Augustus L. and any other Tobias's in and around Beaufort, so I'd love to hear any further information you have. Augustus T. Curtis.
