Origins of Tobias Surname in MS

I married a Tobias. His great-grandfather was a slave who was bought by someone named Turnipseed. Turnipseed changed the slave's name to John Tobias. I am very interested in the origins and the meaning of the name Tobias, if anyone could please help me, it would be appreciated.
