Roswell and Huldah Tobey
Roswell Tobey was probably one of the sons with A (Abigail) Toby in the 1810 census, Sullivan Twp, Madison Co, NY.Roswell and Huldah sold land in Manlius Twp, Onondaga Co, NY in 1816 (which he bought in 1815).Roswell bought land and a blacksmith shop in Sullivan Twp, Madison Co, NY in 1815.
In the 1820 census, Roswell Tobey resided in Sullivan Twp, Madison Co, NY with wife, two sons and a daughter. These are proably George and Lucinda (born about 1816 and 1817) and Edward M (born about 1820).Wm Tuttle, in Pioneers of Madison Co, NY, reported that Roswell Tobey lived in Sullivan (Twp) and was on jail limits for debt in 1822.
No later records have been found for Roswell or Huldah Tobey. However, all three children's names appeared in the Chittenango newspapers in Sullivan Twp.The Chittenango Herald on 14 Mar 1838 reported that Lucinda M Tobey of Chittenango married Benjamin L Hood in Vernon on 10 Mar 1838.George Tobey is referenced in the paper in 1834 and E. M. Tobey twice in 1843.George died in Texas, but his death was reported in March 1850 in the Chittenango Phenix stating he was from that village.Edward and Benjamin Hood opened a jewelry store in Albany; in 1851, the Chittenango Phenix announced that their store in Albany had moved to a new address.
Lucinda and Edward's families resided together in 1850 in Albany. The jewelry partnership broke up in 1854 and Benjamin Hood continued the business alone.Edward moved to St Cloud in 1861 where he died in 1868.Lucinda died in Albany in 1860.
Although Roswell and Huldah Tobey cannot be found on the 1830 or subsequent census, their children remained in the Chittenango, Sullivan Twp, Madison Co, NY.It seems likely that Huldah Tobey remarried.I am searching for Huldah Tobey after 1820 as well as for any additional records for Roswell Tobey.
