James Knox Polk Shelton was born ca 1845-47 in Tennessee. Widow's pension papers state he is from Lebanon TN (Wilson Co). I don't know if that means he was born there, or if that means his family resided there at some point during their marriage. I have been unable to find anything on him thus far in Lebanon. 1850 census index only has 3 or 4 possibilities. Have ruled out the one in Coffee County.
James Knox Polk Shelton was in the Tenn 44th Inf. CSA Co. I as a private. He enlisted on Dec. 7th at Camp Trousdale. I understand the 44th was raised in Lincoln County. If this is true, there is a family on the 1850 Lincoln Co. TN. census that is a possibility. James Shelton b. ca1812 and Jane Unknown with sons: William 12, Peter 9, George P 7, James KP 5, and Ambrose Henderson 3. JKP and William H. both enlisted on Dec. 7, 1861 and were in Co. I, George P. was in Co. B (all in Tenn 44th) I am not sure of George P.'s enlistment date as yet)
The following is not proven, but assumed: Seeking to prove the following information: JKP who was in the Tenn 44th is the son of James b. 1812.
James b. 1812 may be the son of Peter b. 1763 & Mary Graham
Peter the son of James b. 1734 d. 1815 in Lincoln Co. TN & Susannah Vardeman m. abt 1756
James b. 1734 may be the son of Ralph, Jr. b. 1709 and 1st wife Mary Daniel
Ralph, Jr. b. 1709 is the son of Ralph b. 1685 in Middlesex Co. Va and Mary Crisp/Crispen b. 1685
