Mason Family of Brunswick Co. VA
Posted by: Carolyn Anderson (ID *****6027) Date: May 25, 2011 at 08:34:43

Christopher Jr. and Martha Mason of Brunswick Co. died leaving Seven Children:

David Mason b. 1783 (David died 1804 Brunswick Co. and his mother Martha Mason was Adm. of his estate).

James Mason b. 1784
Jane C. "Jincy" Mason b. 1786
Littleberry Mason b. 1789
Joseph Mason b. 1793
Edwin Mason b. ca. 1794
Sarah C. Mason b. 1797

Christopher Mason Jr. died in Brunswick Co. VA 1801.

By the time Martha Mason died 1806 Brunswick Co., both James and Jincy Mason were grown.

Jane Mason married Anderson Wesson, following her mother's death in 1806, and they moved to AL taking Jane's little sister Sarah with them.

Littleberry and Joseph moved within a couple of years to Sumner Co. TN

James Mason married Polly Hancock 1808 Brunswick Co. and James' little brother Edwin Mason was with them in the 1810 Brunswick Co. Census along with James Mason's Uncle Henry Mason. Henry Mason married secondly 1816 Greensville Co. VA to Elizabeth "Lizza" Barnes. They were my second great grandparents.

By 1817 James and Polly Mason had moved to Rutherford Co. TN along with the James, Hancock and House families. Also residing in Rutherford Co. was Elizabeth Mason Marable, wife of Henry Hartwell Marable. Elizabeth Mason and James Mason were cousins. In one will 8 November 1823 in Rutherford Co., James Mason and Elizabeth's son Benjamin Marable were both witnesses.

My questions would be:

1. Did Edwin Mason also move to Rutherford Co. Tn with his brother James Mason? If so does anyone have this Edwin in their tree and did he move somewhere else as I haven't found him in the Rutherford or Williamson Co. 1820 Census.

By the 1820 Census of Rutherford Co. Tn, James and Polly Mason have four daughters and two sons. Then in 1827 one finds queries noting a James Mason Davis born in Rutherford Co. TN and then married later on in Madison Co. TN. The researchers are searching for his parents....

2. Was this James Mason Davis' mother a daughter of James Mason and Polly Hancock? James and Polly's oldest daughter was a baby in the 1810 Brunswick Co. VA Census and appears not to have had her 10th birthday when the 1820 Rutherford Co. TN Census was taken.

We believe another grandson of James Mason and Polly Hancock whose name was also James Mason, moved from WILLIAMSON CO. where he was born and raised, to Madison Co. TN. Not only did James Mason Davis but also James Mason married in Madison Co. James Mason was the first born son of Henry P. Mason and Mary Stephens who married 1833 Williamson Co.

On the Mason Worldwide DNA Site we have exact matches between descendants of Christopher Mason Jr.'s son Littleberry Mason and a descendant of Henry P. Mason's son James Mason of Williamson Co. TN. All indications point to James Mason, brother to Littleberry, as the father of Henry P. Mason but further documentation would be appreciated.

If anyone would like to discuss the above, please contact me at CCA44@aol.com

Thanks,
Carolyn Mason Anderson
