Kenny:

Thanks for your excellent sleuthing on my distant cousin Mary! When I saw the 1910 census with the Newlands having a daughter Mary born in 1890, I thought she might prove to be Mary N. Hord. I will keep looking to find some living descendants, since I think they might have some artifacts of the Wilson family back in the first half of the 19th century and possibly earlier, particularly letters. (If anyone reading this could help me with this, I'd appreciate it.)

I thought you (and perhaps others interested in this forum) might be interested to read what Mary wrote to my dad (or perhaps uncle--I don't have the envelope) back in January 1974:

"My grandmother was Margaret Shaver before her marriage. Her mother was Jane Wilson, who married David [sic] Shaver. I have read letters written by Nancy Jones to my grandmother's sister, Mrs. Mary Shaver Price, about the family history. I also remember reading a letter to her from Yellow Creek, Ky., from her aunt (who would be your great grandmother).

I knew Cousin Molly Jones in Bristol, who would be your grandfather's sister. She had two sons, but I only knew King.

Your grandfather's sister (Maggie) lived in Sullivan Co. with my great-grandmother for some time and she married a Mr. Carmack.

With best wishes,

Mary N. Hord"

Now to unpack this a little with some explanation of the connections. Mrs. Hord mentions that Jane Wilson had married David Shaver. As you've noted in the 1850 and 1860 census records, Jane married John Shaver. I suspect John may have had a brother named David. He definited had a brother named William D. Shaver, who may have gone by David.

The Nancy Jones she mentions is my great-aunt, Nancy Elizabeth Jones Stickly (1882-1962), who was the family genealogist for many years and worked diligently to connect with all her various cousins. Her extensive collection is housed at the Tennessee State Library & Archives and has also be microfilmed. I have seen some information there regarding the Wilson line, but can't recall if there is Shaver information (I'd guess there is).

Nancy's father was John Martin Jones (1835-1908), who was the oldest son of Samuel Chandler Jones (1810-1888) and Isabella Ann Wilson Jones (1815-1854). Isabella was the sister of Jane Laughland Wilson Shaver.

Yellow Creek was the former name of Middlesboro, Kentucky. Sam and Isabella Jones lived there from the late 1830s. Isabella died there and is buried in the family cemetery (now called the Ball cemetery), and Sam appears there as late as the late 1870s.

The Cousin Molly Jones mentioned in the letter is Mary J. Jones (1837-1916), who married William W. James, Sr. (1820-1901). This couple had five sons, but the youngest, King, seems to have lived the longest and was closest in age to Mrs. Hord. William W. James was a leading citizen in Blountville and later in Bristol. William James was Molly's cousin--his mother Nancy Condra Wilson James, the older half-sister of Isabella Wilson Jones.

I believe Isabella's illness (and eventual death) contributed to the reason her daughter, Margater R. Jones, lived in her sister Jane's household in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but I don't have any facts to back that up. Ironically, Margaret also appears with her own family in Knox County, Kentucky in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses. I'm not sure why she'd appear in both places, particularly in both censuses, but I'm certain it's the same person in both places. She married William Carmack, probably in the late 1860s, and died in Bristol in 1869.

I really appreciate the input you provided on Margaret Shaver and her descendants. If you have further information about Jane Wilson's ancestry or desire to know what I have, I'd be happy to share it.

Finally, I'd be interested to know whether you and/or Rebecca Taylor are descended from Margaret Shaver and thus from the Wilsons. I recently received a photo album that has several photos of the East Tennessee cousins from back in the 19th century, but I can't identify all of them. One of the items in the album was a memorial card for John Shaver that includes the statement "Died June 10 1888. Aged 88 years, 8 mos, 13 days."

Regards,

Chip
