I am searching for a man, for my aunt, who is in her direct lineage by the name of Newton Jasper Eaton Robinson.
In 1850, he along with a sister, Edith, was living with Elizabeth Robertson and her children(Elizabeth, William D, and Olevia J. Robertson)in May, Rutherford, Tennessee. There is no indication as to what their relationship was to Elizabeth and her children, nor any mention of Elizabeth Robertson's husband by name.
Newton married Sarah Frances White in 1859, under the name of Eaton,in Rutherford county. Some indicate may have acquired the license in Rutherford but was married in Bedford county.
In the next Federal Census (1860), he continued using the name Eaton. He was listed as a carpenter
However, when he signed up for the Civil War, he had changed his last name to Robinson...
A number of theories can be thought of on this situation
1. Newton and his sister had come to town on an orphan train in hopes that someone would adopt them or take them in
2. Elizabeth Robertson was possibly related, perhaps an aunt. There are records indicating a Richard Robinson married an Elizabeth Eaton in Rutherford county. It Eaton Robinson.
3. That he was the son of John Eaton who had lived in Rutherford county in 1840. Census records of 1840nmatch enough to surmise that Newton and Edith were children of John Eaton.
My aunt would like to know why Newton changed his name to Robinson from Eaton...and more about his birth family. Anyone with information that would shed light on this please respond to my email address: email@example.com and in the subject please put Newton Jasper Robinson or Rutherford, Tennessee as part of the subject so I can attend to my aunts needs quickly.
Thanking you in advance,
