Hi Kay and Katherine,
I'm researching the same Hancock families through the marriage of Polly Hancock to James Mason 23 May 1808 Brunswick Co. VA. This couple also moved to Rutherford Co. TN. Here are examples of James Mason with the Hancocks in the Rutherford Co. Court Records:
Apr 1817 Book 4, p 63 Inventory was made by James Mason, and Benjamin Hancock owed money to estate.
April 4, 1826 Book 6, p 200 Guardian return (deceased not mentioned) Francis Hancock is appointed guardian of wards, Mary A. Edwards and Sally B Edwards with special guardian James Mason.
Mary A. and Sally B. Edwards were daughters of Thomas Edwards and wife Elizabeth Hancock. Elizabeth a daughter of Benjamin Hancock and Sarah Stainback of Brunswick Co.
This James Mason was a son of Christopher Jr. and wife Martha Mason of Brunswick Co. His wife Polly Hancock was also a daughter of Benjamin Hancock and Sarah Stainback of the same county.
I know that in 1810 Brunswick Co. James and Polly had a daughter under age 10. Then in the 1820 Census for Rutherford Co. TN they were parents of two sons under age 10 and four daughters.
Kay, the following notes Caroline Hancock Scales:
Dec 18, 1826 Book 6, p 352 Guardian settlement (deceased not named) Benjamin Hancock named guardian of Caroline M. Hancock (now Scales) Daughter of Francis Hancock
I'm hoping to be able to locate the descendants of James Mason and wife Polly Hancock of Rutherford Co. TN. We are also attempting to find if James and Polly had both died by the 1830 Rutherford Census or if they had moved. I'm working with a Mason descendant whom we believe his ancestor was a son of James Mason and Polly Hancock and I'm hoping to help him in verifying his descent on the Mason Worldwide DNA back to Capt. John Mason the Elder. He does match exactly to a another direct descendant of Christopher Jr. and Martha Mason. Also, this man's ancestor married in Williamson Co. in the 1830's thus placing him in the same area of TN.
If anyone might be able to help us with the James Mason and Polly Hancock family we would really appreciate your assistance.
Carolyn Mason Anderson
