Robert,
I, too, would of thought in those days that people would of been buried closer to where they lived; however, we lived in Great Falls, MT and there is a cemetery out in the middle of no where that is, to this day, amongst a bunch of ranches and farms. Perhaps in those days a lot of people lived closer to this cemetery than now, but if not, then they would of had to walk, or rode wagons or something, to reach their final resting place.

If you can give some more data on the line you are researching, perhaps I can find some data for you.
