Jacob "Jake" BUTCHER, Va./Tn. + Martha BRUMMETT, Tn.
I'm looking for ancestors of Jacob "Jake" Butcher, b. Virginia 1843, maybe, 1842 or 1844. He is buried in Sunset Cemetary, Anderson County, TN. (information source from cemetary states 1843).
Census records of 1870, 1880, 1900 show both, Jacob and Martha, as well as some of the known children; Claude, James, Albert, Ida, Magnetie (Nettie), Mary, Jesse, Charles. These names are all known relatives to our family. The 1910 Census shows Nettie as "57w" (widowed)but no Jacob, as he has died in or by 1908. So, this all fits pretty well into place, as far as who and what and where.
I am stuck at Jacob's Father and Mother and of course, unable to break through to any ancestry before Jacob's parents. I think I'm looking for a BUTCHER parent being born ABT 1820, given, this parent Butcher would have probably been married and started a family around age 20. I've been expanding research (online) to Union County, TN (the neighboring county to Anderson County) and beginning to look in VA., as the information I have to date, seems to point to VA. for Jacob's birth. One source I found mentions Lee County, Virginia. This makes Jacob stand out a little, as nearly all other Butchers in this line appear to have been born and buried in Tennessee.
Here's a few questions I've been asking myself while researching Jacob:
1. Was Jacob was born in Virginia and brought into Tennessee by a (or both) parents?
2. Did his parents have him while temporarily away to Virginia?
3. Did his parents live in Virginia and Jacob moved away as a young adult?
4. What relation were Virginia Butchers to Tennessee Butchers?
5. If Jacob's parents brought him to TN, did they stay and leave Jacob with relatives or move elsewhere or return to their home without Jacob?
6. Did his parents die and TN Butchers (or maternal family) raise Jacob?
7. How did Jacob meet Martha?
8. Was Jacob an illegitamate child or the child of a relative then, adopted/fostered as a Butcher, etc?
9. Is the Virginia birth information incorrect?
Sadly, the Tennessee Valley Authority relocated many Butcher gravesites to keep them from being flooded over with the TVA dam system. So, no telling what was lost or shuffled in that process.
As for Martha Brummett, I have found various spellings, like, Brummit, Brunnett and Brummet but from Cemetary records at Sunset Cemetary, there is indication her full name was MARTHA KATHERN BRUMMETT, as spelled. Also, the middle name or intial seems to waver from Martha Ann (Mollie), Martha J (perhaps Jane), depending on sources, i.e.,
1. Martha Ann (Mollie)4 Brummet (Thomas3, Thomas2, FNU1)
was born June 07, 1850 in TN, and died January 04, 1928 in Clinton,
Anderson Co, TN. She married Jacob (Jake) Butcher March 04, 1866 in
Anderson Co, TN. He was born 1843 in Lee Co, VA and died Nov 8, 1908
In TN.
-or-
2. JACOB1 BUTCHER was born 1843 in VA., and died 1908 in TN. He married MARTHA KATHERN BRUMMETT March 04, 1866 in Anderson Co, TN. She was born 1850 in TN, and died 1928 in TN.
In the continuing line of both these sources, the children are the same. "Mollie" also, seems to be used as a nickname for Martha and Martha and Jake's child, Mary Ellen b. 1880, married Tate Calvin CHILDRESS.
Again, basic info is:
JACOB "Jake" BUTCHER was born 1843 in VA., and died 1908 in TN. He married MARTHA (J./Ann/Kathern?) BRUMMETT March 04, 1866 in Anderson Co, TN. She was born 1850 in TN, and died 1928 in TN.
CHILDREN:
James Samuel b 1867

Ida McCarty b.1872
Magneti "Nettie"b.1877
Mary Ellen "Mollie"b. 1880
