I would like to share some recently discovered information on Confederate soldiers who died of injuries in battle at Fort Donelson or illnesses in camp in Clarksville, TN, my ancestor being one of them. This info originates with Blanche Lewis, a young lady in Clarksville who helped care for these sick and dying soldiers. She kept a journal of those she cared for who came to Clarksville, TN for medical care. The only info that has ever been available is from an article in the Confederate Veteran's magazine in the early 1900s listing the names from the journal. Blanche's parents were George T. and Margaretta O. Lewis, and her brothers were Major E. C. Lewis and John S. Lewis, both living in Nashville, Davidson County, during that time (1860-1870).
Based on info in the article, Blanche was born about 1848 in Cumberland Iron Works, Stewart Co., educated at Norristown, PA, moved to McNinnville, TN sometime before the war and died there on 9-13-1902. She, her mother, and other local residents voluntarily assisted in caring for these soldiers, even to the point of opening up their (Lewis) home to care for the more serious injuries. There is a touching story about her engagement to Edwin Augustus Tarwater. They were to be married on 12-25-1868, when he became ill and died on what was to be their wedding day. He is buried in the Lewis family plot at Riverview Cemetery in Clarksville, and Blanche never married.
Also, in 1897, the remains of 127 soldiers were found, exhumed from mass graves and reinterred at Riverview Cemetery in Clarksville. They later discovered where the other 178 bodies were buried, but these bodies could not be moved in time before a new bridge was built over the gravesites. In honor of these fallen soldiers, this bridge in Clarksville was named "The Conferate Memorial Bridge". There is no way of knowing which soldiers were buried in the cemetery, so in 2001, the local chapter of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans placed two memorial plaques with all 305 soldiers' names listed at the gravesite at Riverview Cemetery. There are soldiers from at least seven states buried there (AL, AR, KY, MS, TN, TX, VA). I have listed those from MS below.
The Confederate Veterans Magazine articles on Blanche, the list of names, and her mother are listed below. This magazine should be located at any Archives Dept.(no dates but shouldn't need them..the volume number indicates the date of publication):
Blanche - Vol. X, pp. 466-467
List of Names - Vol. IX, p. 65
Mother - Vol. VIII, p. 330
