DONELSON/DAVIES/STOCKELY/HUTCHINGS
Catherine DAVIES may have been the sister of Rev. Samuel DAVIES, President of Princeton Univ. In Dr. William H. Whitsitt's GENEALOGY OF JEFFERSON DAVIS and of SAMEUEL DAVIES,(1910) he ties these two families together. He states that David DAVIES was the father of Dr. Samuel DAVIES, that David was born 1680 and died 11 Aug 1759. Dr. Whitsitt shows David Davies wife to be Martha THOMAS, daughter of Elizius and Mary ?. Also, he shows these immigrants to be settlers in the Welsh Tract Baptist settlement,New Castle Co.,Delaware. Dr. Whitsitt shows David DAVIES to have a brother John DAVIS and wife Ann. Dr. Whitsitt gives a large number of documents about these individuals and shows where the names are spelled DAVIS, DAVIES, DAVID a number of times within the same documents.
He then goes on to show John DAVIS and his wife Ann to be the parents of David DAVIS and Evan DAVIS (perhaps 1702 -1765). Evan married Mrs. Williams, nee Emory and they were the parents of Samuel DAVIS (1756-1824) who married Jane COOK and were the parents of Jefferson DAVIS and his siblings. I am trying to figure out where the errors are and if in fact, SAMUEL DAVIES of Princeton University is the brother of my CATHERINE DAVIES. And, are they cousins to Jefferson DAVIS. Dr. Whitsitt also shows MORGAN DAVIES to be the father of David and John DAVIES/DAVIS, an immigrant from Lanwit-Fardre, Wales.
Catherine DAVIES married John DONELSON had John DONELSON II, William, Andrew and Mary in Virginia and Maryland. Their son John married Rachel STOCKLEY about 1749 in Virginia and their daughter, Catherine DONELSON married Thomas HUTCHINGS. Col. John DONELSON and Capt. Thomas HUTCHINGS were pioneers into Tennessee and established French Lick, which became Nashville.
If anyone is working on any of these lines, especially the DAVIES/DAVID/DAVID ancestry, please, let's get together and see if we can work this out. I have never been so frustrated! Meli
