Philip,
Prepare yourself for a bigger LOOP.Andrew Carothers was not the father of Mattie.
Where did you get the information that he was!!!!Look at the census below.
1880 Coryell Co. TX - ED# 23 - June 29, 1880 - page 55C/419
468/473
Carothers, William H. - head - 77 - widower - farmer - GA GAGA
Andrew - son - 50 - SINGLE - farmer - TN GA TN
Amzie - son - 27 - single - farmer - TN GA TN
* 3 laborers
(I did an open search for an Andrew Carothers, born in 1848, give or take two years, and that was the only one that came up.His age was acceptable, and the birth places for him, his father and his mother, match those of the Andy on the 1900 census that you refer to.)
Now if you will go back and look at your same census that you asked me to look at, you will notice that there were a number of 0 0 0 0after Andrew's name.One of them was that he was single, one was for the fact that he had been married 0 years, one was for never having had children, and the final one was for him not having any living children.
Now if Andrew was in his fathers home in 1880, single - then he could not have been the father of Mattie who should have been almost 3 years old.
