Thanks, Barbra, for the lead.I will check it out.If this is the Mary I am searching for, she would be 2 or 3 years younger than I was expecting, certainly within the realm of possibility. The census of 1880 was probably completed and posted after mid-year and, depending on when the data was collected, checks with the information I have on the Van Cleaves. There were other Van Cleave families in Carroll or Benton Counties in 1880, so the names you came across do not place them in the same immediate family, though I have no doubt they were all cousins.
Of note, there were two other Van Cleave sons of Jasper in 1880: Parlee Colster (b. Oct 30, 1857) and Albert Bennett (b. Jun 4, 1859).This Albert must be the Albert working on the Mebane's farm.
Three other sons were born to Jasper and Catherine: Stanford (would have been about three years old at the time of the census, perhaps he did not survive...?), Albert Isaac Maniere (born in Dec 1880) and E. O. (never have had anything besides initials for a name, born in 1884 and is said to have died before his second birthday or in infancy).
I believe the Steven (Stephen) you cite as working in a sawmill is a nephew of Jasper.
