William Hatcher Family & Story
ELIJAH HATCHER was the son of WILLIAM HATCHER of Wears Cove, Sevier Co., Tenn. and ELIZABETH CROWSON, (dau. of William Crowson and sister of Aaron Crowson). The original Hatcher papers show that Elijah inherited from his father William. A deed of gift from William Crowson to his daughter Elizabeth hatcher "wife of William Hatcher" establishes this relationship. Letters to their sister from brothers of Aaron Crowson prove other relationships in the hatcher and Crowson families.
The Old Walker record that lists the children of Tom Walker had the following entry: "Becca married Lige Hatcher." This is the only entry in the old Walker recrods that gives the full name of the spouse.
An interesting story was told by Tom Walker, of Knox County, about Rebecca Walker's sister Nancy (we do not know to which sister this referes). He said that Nancy, when just a girl, together with other women, was in a row boat on Little River about one mile above the mouth of Ellejoy Creek at the bend of the river when the Indians attacked the men who were in the fields. The men were armed but many were on the west side while the fort was on the flat land on the east side. There was a lot of fighting and yelling. Some of the Indians were in the water although it was very deep. The women were frantic at the sight of the Indians. One Indian who was in the water threw his arm over the side of the boat in an effort to sink it. Nancy had the pole (they used a pole to propel the boat) and she brought it down across the Indian's arm breaking it. This saved the day as it took all the Indians in the water to keep the one with the broken arm from drowing. Another relative's grandmother told him the same story except this version sates that Rebecca was also in the boat. She said Nancy picked up a hatchet and cut off the Indian's hand. That an incident of this nature occured with a Nancy Walker as the heroine can hardly be doubted. It is however quite possible that Nancy was not the sister of Rebecca.
We were unable to locate the Bible records of the family of Rebecca Walker and Elijah Hatcher. The names of their children were obtained from the census and descendants, some of whom remembered Rebecca. All the Hatcher children were born in Millers Cove, Bounty County, Tenn. Many of them married there and lived their lives in that locality. Rebecca Walker was living with her son Noah in 1870.
