The youngest son of 7 sons born to George Green and Judith Spillman, Alexander Little Page Green, was born in Sevier Co., TN, 6-26-1806.He was one of sixteen children. He was called Page for the Rev. John Page, who was a distinguished preacher in his day, and died only a few years since in extreme old age. When ALP was a child his father removed from Sevier to Rhea Co., TN and after a few years' residence, to North Alabama (Jackson Co.) where he settled in Honey-comb Valley and remained til his death in 1823.(These words were written by a son of ALP, Rev. William M. Green, abt 1875 and a copy is in the Metro Archives of Nashville, Davidson Co., TN)
Family tradition had it that George Green was born in VA, was a worthy cion of one of the second familites. This was set aside by his daughter, Mrs Maria (Green) Prentice, and his grandson, Mr. W. A. Green, who both testify on good authority, that he was a Marylander, out of one of the first families. He was born shortly after his parents came over from "Merrie england;" and, while he was not "of the Puritans," there was a broad vein of Puritanism in his religious havit.
George Green married Judith Spillman, a girl of fifteen, in 1776, the first year of American Independence.Judith was born in Albemarle county, VA in 1761.She was converted the year of her marriage, and joined the despised Methodists eight years before the formal organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America.
After George died in 1823, Judith went to live with son ALP in Nashville, TN.Lamented and beloved, she withered away, March 18, 1846, at the home of her son in Nashville, closing a long life of eighty-five years.
George was supposed to have joined the American army and serve in the command of General Greene (Nathaniel Greene, but according to someone under the Rev War forum, they could not find any such name under Gen. Nathaniel Greene's command.)George was purportedly one of the men who drove the boasting Ferguson from King's Mountain.George Green owned no slaves.Coke and Asbury shared his good cheer; and Dr. J. B. McFerrin, when a beardless boy, ministered in holy things under his roof.
The above is all in a book written on the Life of ALP Green, D.D.
My husband is descended from James Berry Green, a son of George and Judith who remained in Rhea Co., TN and then of his son Walter Joshua and his daughter June Green and her daughter Nancy Barger. They hold a Green family reunion each July 4th weekend but the most they have are about 8 or 9 of the 16 children's names.I have no doubt that some were born in VA and then Sevier Co or area of TN and that by time they removed from Rhea Co. to Jackson Co., AL, the children were mostly old enough to know if they wanted to follow, which some did, or to stay where they wished to live.
This is the most I know of this family of Greens.I myself, descend from the Quidnessett Greenes of Rhode Island down thru James, to the Kings, Nichols, McKibbens to my grandmother Maggie Swanson, to Gray.
It is very interesting however how it appears that whether there is an e on the name or not, the bulk of Green(e)s in America can all be linked at some point in the descending lines.
Hope this helps to locate some of the other children and siblings. Thanks for your help.Betty
