P. H. Givens in Tennessee
I am looking for connections to my Givens kin in Tennessee.
My G-Great Grandfather was Peter Harrison Givens. He was born in 1832 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. On February 3rd, 1850, he married Martha Ann Brizendine. She was born June 13th 1827, in Dandridge, Tennessee. Her parents were Thomas R. Brizendine and Martha R. Davis. Peter Harrison Givens was a private in Co G. Walker's Battalion, Thomas Legion of North Carolina, CSA. His unit was transferred to Co. H. Carter's 1st Tennessee Cavalry. He died on April 12th 1864, in Nashville, Tennessee. He is buried at Nashville National Cemetery, Plot: P 12594. The children of Peter Harrison Givens and Martha Ann Brizendine were: William A., John Wesley (my great-grandfather), Dorcus J., and Charlie Hugh.
John Wesley was born June 21, 1854 and died December 13, 1918. He married twice. First to Carrie Hattie Burnett on October 9, 1883. They had three children: Earl, Osmond Boyn "OB" and Burnett Cawood "BC". After the death of Carrie he moved to South Carolina and on November 16th 1898 married Nannie Hitch of Laurens County, South Carolina. They had two children. Their son was John Wesley Givens Jr. and his son is Thomas Eugene Givens (my father).
According to the 1850 census, we find, J. A. Givens, age 40, his wife, Martha also 40, and their children: Balvado 18; Thomas 12; James 10; Sarah 8; Lucinda 6; John 4; Rebecca 2; & Martha 1. Nearby can be found: Peter H age 18 & wife, Martha J age 22. I have no evidence but I am thinking that J. A. is Peter's father. This would make Peter a twin. In the 1860 census there was no J. A. & Martha, perhaps they had died by then. In dwelling #394, there was an E(f) 11; S(f)5; JA)m)18;JC(m)14; living with Tho Collins 38 & his wife, C 37; their children; N(f)18;J?(m)16;WHH(m)16;EM(f)12;GW(f)11;S(f)10;HJ(f)7;MC(m)1. Then in dwelling #339 there is Peter H 24; Martha J 28;& their children:Wm A 9;John W 5; Dorcas J 3; & not named female 8/12. Also listed in dwelling #351 is James Givens 12.
If any of this sounds familiar to you, would you be so kind as to drop me a line. Thank you and best of luck.
All the best,
Michael Givens
