Yes, there is usually problems with census records in the early years I have found. Many times too the initials would be reversed. My eldest ancestor's full name was not mentioned until the 1870 census and he was first listed in 1840. I found the only way to match Bible records with the census was with the children's names. I know this does not solve your problem, but I wish you well with your search.
