Wes, I don't know how successful you were in making a connection to a Mathews family. However, my Rose family married two sisters who's name was Mathis, often spelled as Mathews. The Mathis family were from Richland County South Carolina. There were several brothers, my family married two daughters of Richardson Mathis. They lived near each other in Maury Co. and moved to Johnson County Illinois around 1840. there are still remnants of Mathis in that county. Hope this might be of some help. Names do get screwed up over time, as you probably well know.
