I am writing in Marshall Co., TN, since Cornersville, Giles
Co., TN, is said to be now in Marshall Co.
Charles Alexander, born Jan 4, 1755, Mecklenburg Co., NC,
was the son of Benjamin and Susannah (Polk) Alexander, who
was in the Rev. War, S-21,599. Raised to Capt. near end.
Sources said that the wife and children of Charles Alexander was Margaret Alexander and several children (Vol I in Alexander Kin). However, one of these sources gave
the Charles in question a # 6,488 for pension and he was NOT my Charles Alexander.
In 1814, my Charles Alexander migrated to Cornersville, GILES CO., TN, near the LINCOLN CO. LINE.
His cousin, Rev. Leonidas Polk, visited with Charles on
Sept 8, 1834, in Maury Co., TN. Leonidas writings say that
Charles was blind (cataracts?) and lived on SWAN CREEK some
15 miles from "here" (where is here?). Leonidas said that
Charles had lived in Cornersville, Giles Co., TN, "until
about 18 months ago" [from visit date of Sept 8, 1834]
Charles told him that he would be 80 if he lived until Jan 4, next (1835).
The same source said that Charles was living in LINCOLN CO., TN, when he began trying to collect from the government $2,000. to compensate him for some hauling that
he had done for the army, and some 400 bushels of corn he
allegedly sold to the army, for which he had not been paid.
He wrote to his cousin, James Knox Polk, from CORNERSVILLE,
TN, 16 June 1832. [this is where mention is made that
Cornersville is now in MARSHALL CO., TN). A petition was
attached to his request signed by a number of people living
in LINCOLN CO., and listed in the 1830 census [from papers
of James Knox Polk]
Since there is some question as to who my Charles' wife was
and who their children were, I would appreciate it very much to know the NAME OF HIS WIFE, and the NAME OF HIS CHILDREN. Very likely, some children would marry and stay
in NC, or GILES, LINCOLN, MARSHALL, MAURY CO., TN, locations.
Can anyone help me even with a hint as to where I might find this information????
