What interests me about this is the William Jefferson was never identified as a mulatto once he left Peter's home, but the other children were identified as mulatto up through the 1870. That makes me think that Peter Mallett was married more than once. John Begley was said to be the Uncle of the Mallett children in a pension file.

Peter Mallett was living with James Hicks and wife in 1810 Wilkes County and then next door to Pattsy Hicks in 1820 Wilkes County who appears to be the former wife of James Hicks. Peter Mallett must have been a former slave of Hicks or he married a daughter of Hicks as an FPC. There is reason to believe that he was the child of a slave of the Malletts of Mecklenberg County, VA. A James Hicks used to live there and bought slaves from the Malletts.
