Roxana Belle Davis, Orphan, Ward of Capt. James W. Irwin, Wife of G. C. Morris

I am looking for my great-great grandmother, Roxana Belle Davis (12/31/1862-7/16/1938).

According to the census, she was born in Mississippi, her mother was born in Arkansas, and her father was born in Tennessee. She married Dr. George C. Morris in Hardin Co. on 18 August 1877. They had 11 children, including my great-grandmother, Lula Cordelia. Roxie and Dr. Morris are buried in Savannah City Cemetery.

That's all I know for certain.

My search for her parents has come up with almost nothing, except for a Roxana Davis b. 1863 in Miss on the 1870 census in Phillips Co. Ark. with her mother Nancy Davis and her mother's aunt's family, the Burrises. I don't know if this is my Roxie or not, though it seems likely.

HOWEVER, family tradition among the Armstrongs in Savannah holds that Roxie was an orphan (possibly illegitimate) and was taken in as the ward of Captain James W. Irwin (or Irvin).

ANY leads on this would be a huge help. Even if you don't know anything about Roxie, if you're also connected to these Morrises I'd still love to talk to you.

Ash Armstrong
