It seems that I have three lines of Holts, two from Randall/Randolph Holt group and Drury Holt from the Richard / Robert group. Y DNA shows that David Holt (1765 VA)--->Henry Holt (1787 VA) were kin to Drury (b. <poss. 1759> VA). Before Drury and his family moved to Whitley Co, KY, he lived in, I believe, Hawkins Co, TN, after leaving VA. Your Holts, David's group, also moved to TN, mainly in Grainger and Claiborne Co., TN initially.
The wife of a Holt descendant contacted me to see if I could help clear up some confusing findings about her husband's Y DNA results. He matched with Pleasant Holt's donors and with an Evans donor. What I found was that David Holt, his son, Henry Holt, and a couple of Henry's sons were indeed Holts by blood, matching with the Richard/Robert Holt group. The son of Henry's who did not prove to be fathered by Henry was Pleasant Holt (1817). Henry's son, Preston, proved to be a Henry's bio. son.
All of Henry's sons haven't had descendants, who have been Y DNA donors, but of the ones who have, Pleasant is the only one who wasn't Henry's biological son. At this time, it appears his bio. father may have been an Evans. There were plenty of Evans famillies living in the same area in TN.
Whether Pleasant fathered children outside of his marriage or not, I don't know anything about that as I'm not a descendant of David Holt's and haven't researched their family history.
The Holt man, whose search I'm helping him with, knew very little about his Holts, beyond his grandfather. He was supposedly born in OH. My focus has been to find his Holt line back to Pleasant Holt and find out why all Pleasant Holt's donors didn't match with Pleasant's brothers Y DNA, and to find out why he matched with an Evans donor, whose ancestor was born in 1859 in GA.
I will study what you've said in your message and see what I can glean from it. If I have questions, I hope you don't mind if I email you.
Another donor whose Y DNA matched Pleasant's donors was a William T. Poore. His mother had Wm. when she was a young, single girl. The mother was b. 1841 in Claiborne Co, TN. William could have been fathered by a man named Evans or by one of Pleasant's sons or grandsons who was a Holt (by name).
