Hi, I descend from George Brooks b. 1804 SC who moved to Cocke Co, TN by 1830. I have a land grant dated Feb 1830. George's brother, Warren Dugan Brooks, b. 1812 SC md. 1833 in Cocke Co, TN Sarah "Sally" Stokely b. 1813, TN (d/o David Royal and Jane "Jennie" Huff Stokely). My grandmother was George's g.granddaughter. She wrote some "fun facts" about her childhood in Cocke Co, TN. One was a story about Jim Huff who wanted to date her. She wouldn't go out with him though. Years later, Jim Huff told one of her brothers that he still loved her to which his wife replied, "then why didn't you marry HER!" I'm curious about the name of Royal and how it related to both the Stokeleys and the Brooks. George Brooks named a son Royal, b. 1835 Cocke Co, TN. George's brother, Warren Brooks named a son Royal as well. Of course, this was after his wife's father, David Royal Stokely. There was also another Royal Brooks, b. 1814 SC. And I found a Royal Lain living next door to William Brooks in the 1870 Cocke Co, TN census. Do you know what the origin of the name Royal might be within these families?
