Followup question for Charles McDaniel: I am working on a supplemental DAR application that goes through the line of James G. Gaskins's daughter, Amanda Elizabeth. She's my great-grandmother. I found your excellent outline of information on this thread. My uncle has written a family history based on a lot of family memories, I doubt there was much internet involved. He also names the son of James Gaskins and Mary Askins as "James GARFIELD" Gaskins, and said that James Garfield was married many times, with many children. I have found 4 marriages, 3 different wives on censuses which confirms his family story.
My main question is about a "source" for the name Garfield. He is listed as James G. on marriage and census records, and only James in his grandfather's will. I would like to be able to document the middle name and convince DAR that he is the brother of Enoch, who has already been "proven." Thanks for your help.
