John -

What location ? Do you know where your William was born of lived before Tennessee ?

Stone's River was named for Uriah Stone, a noted "long hunter" who lived ca 1730-1775 at least.

I checked these that I have -

1812 tax list, Warren County - found no Stone,.
1820 census, Warren, no Stone (may not be complete)_,.
1850 census, Warren. No Stones there except a doctor born in NY.

It appears your Stones came to Warren/Cannon after 1820.

Your Stones lived among several families connected to my wife's ancestors (Sullens/Spurlocks, et al) This would be near Short Mountain and the village of Mechanicsville called "Half Acre: in early days.

- Ken
