Stovalls in Bedford County 1900

My ggrandfather was J.A. Stovall of Shelbyville. My grandfather Cartier Stovall was born in Dallas TX in 1902. Family legend has it that J.A. and his brother (name unknown) were run out of Shelbyville when they blew up an old man's porch while he was sitting on it and they came to Texas to stay with their Patterson cousins (one of whom J.A. eventually married). J.A. never went back home as far as I know. I have letters written to Cartier when he passed through Tennessee on his way to and from ROTC camp in 1920 with instructions to take pictures of the old home place. I can't find out any more about this family because Texas birth records only go back to 1903. Can anyone help me with this?
