Goodspeeds Book of TN, published originally 1886 lists the following:

W. Thompson, one of the numerous members of the Thompson family of Bedford Co is a farmer living about four miles west of Shelbyville. He was born August 20, 1842, in Bedford Co. His father John F. Thompson, was born in Bedford Co being a son of one of those Thompsons who came from No Carolina in the very early settlement of this part of the State. John was a farmer all his life, his death occuring August 23, 1883. The mother is now living five miles NW of Shelbyville. The subject of this sketch was reared on a farm. At the age of 22 he married and coninued farming, which he has successfully followed ever since, now owning 300 acres of good land well improved. He was one of the boys in gray, serving from July 1861 till June 1862, in Blanton's Company of the 23rd TN. At the battle of Shiloh he lost a leg and in June, 1862, returned home. He was married in 1864 to HULDA B. Wilhoite, the results of this union being ten children, seven of whom are now living, Eunice, Richard, Lydia, Warner, Charles, Purdey and an infant. Mr. Thompson is a Democrat in politics. He his wife and eldest daughter are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. (page 1179)

Also lists John W. Thompson son of Newcom and Amy (Fisher) Thompson
George W. Thompson, also son of Newcom and Amy Thompson
Thomas C. Thompson, son of W.F. and Harriet P. (Hall) Thompson
Zach Thompson, son of Col. Robert E. and Mary (Tolliver)Thompson
W.E.A. Thompson, A.B. son of Mr. Thompson and Ellen C. (Williams) Thompson

Note: John W. Thompson was married to Miss M.J. PANNELL does that fit at all since her last name was listed as Powell I wondered if it was the same John you had. Could it be??
