BC Civil War Experts--Need your help!

I am researching Andrew Jackson Dickens (aka A. J.) whose tombstone in the Yoes Cemetery in Bedford County, TN says, Co. A, 5th Tenn Cav.

Family stories say he died as a prisoner of war in Nashville, TN from the measles.

what I need to know is: Was this unit a Confederate or a Union unit? What battles did they fight in?

Was the prison in Nashville a Union run prison or a Confederate?

Any light you can shed on this would be most appreciated!
