Thanks for the reply. You are correct. I was able to confirm this myself through the Civil War pension application papers on James E. Smith, which I obtained a few months ago.

Nancy E. Raney was the second wife of James E Smith. His first wife was Mary Parmelia King. James and Mary had two children: Thomas Anthony and Mary Ann, who was 16 days old when her mother, Mary, died in Bedford County. This information is from an affidavit by Thomas Anthony Smith (my gg-grandfather) dated 25 Nov 1890.

You probably also know that Susannah (Merrill) Raney, wife of Thomas, was a sister to Mary (Merrill) Smith, mother of James E. Smith.
