I was wondering if you could shed a little light on the use of 'y' in Spanish Surnames. My name is Steven Tomasula. My wife's name is Maria Garcia. We were thinking of naming our daughter Ambrose Tomasula y Garcia. Our thinking is that the 'y' would serve the function of the hyphen that Americans use in their names. We prefer to not use Tomasula Garcia because we're afraid one name or the other would continually be cut off. Nor do we want to use Tomasula de Garcia, because this would indicate that our daughter was married. Thus, we landed on the 'y' as in the author's name Ortega y Gasset. Does the use of 'y' connote anything we are unaware of that would mess up our logic here?
Any help you could give would be appreciated.
Yours,
Steve
