"Col. Isaac Titsworth kept a journal which included the Indian attack in which his wife was killed, it stated that
they were startled from their sleep when they heard the war cries of the Indians, he grabbed up two of his sons,
while his wife was taking Margaret, they hid them as best they could before rejoining the others in the fight.
Margaret refused to stay anywhere but with her mother, so she helped with the ammunitions. At one point, an
Indian had spotted Margaret and came straight at her weapon held to strike, Mrs. Titsworth threw herself between
her daughter and the Indian thus taking the fatal blow. She was not scalped due to the fact that the blow had split
the top of her skull right down the middle, making the taking of her scalp impossible. Col. Titsworth's journal was still in the family as late as 1920."
(June goes on to say)" I was in touch with a woman who is also related to Isaac Titsworth, through his son John
Gabriel Titsworth. He told of being hung by the hair and dragged through the thick underbrush until the top of his
head peeled off, and then thrown into a sinkhole, where he was later found by the militia. The Indians did not take time to scalp the children, they hung them by their hair off of their horses as they were trying to escape the militia. Margaret was about ten or eleven years old when she was captured and told stories of her captivity, one being of boiling turtle eggs, and being beaten because the eggs were never done, later she found that turtle eggs cannot be hardboiled. On the day her father came after her, the Indians tied her hands to the mane of a horse and rode her across the river. She told of seeing huge chunks of ice floating down river and being afraid one of them would hit her horse."

"....Half of the history account of Isaac say "they were moving from North Carolina" when then massacre happened.
Later researchers, not researching this, misread the data and got the totally wrong impression. I understand what
they did, but not sure how to put it down. Tennessee was North Carolina! Isaac lived in Tennessee Co., North Carolina,
1783-1788/89, but this is middle Tennessee, it's Robertson and Montgomery Counties. Tennessee did not become a
state until 1796!! So yes he was moving from North Carolina to Kentucky, but they all think of it as the North Carolina
we know now".

Notes from Georgia Mayne [email protected] 10/97:
A Fenner Baker exhumed Isaac Titsworth's remains from the original burial location at the foot of Short Mountain and reinterred them in the Oakwood Cemetery; Paris, Logan, Arkansas. No marker has been erected at the present time. (the original information was written on 1/17/1987) (7) I have that he was married only once, but he must have had more that one wife since his last three children (David, Spear and John) were all born after the death of his listed wife.(Georgia)

In 1788 a tobacco inspection was established at Clarksville, the first in the state. In the same year Tennessee County, out of which Montgomery County was carved, was established, and a Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was held at the house of Isaac Titsworth, on Person's Creek for the first and second sessions.
Knoxville Gazette Vol. 3, #24
29 November1794
On the fifth instant a party of fifty Indians on the waters of the Red River Tennessee County fell upon the families of Col. Isaac Titsworth and his brother John Titsworth and killed and scalped seven white persons, wounded a negro wench and took a white man, three children and a negro fellow, prisoners. Pursuit was given by the neighboring Militia, and the Indians discovering their approach, tomahawked the three children taking off the whole skin of their heads. The white man and negro fellow were either killed or carried off. Our informer from the Mero District supposes these murders to have been committed by the Creeks.

Vol. #1
Mr. Roulstone, Please to give the following a place in your paper. On the 5th of October, 1794, on the waters of Red River, myself and family, together with the family of John Titsworth, were attacked by Indians about 12 o'clock at night; my wife, John Titsworth, his wife, one child, and one of my childen and one negro (were) killed on the ground, and captured three of my children, one of John Titsworth's and a negro. Next day, being pursued by Major Maulden and others, they killed and scalped one of my children, and wounded and scalped another of John Titsworth's, then made off with a daughter of mine, about 13 years of age, named Peggy, and a negro boy about 15 or 16 years of age, named Mingo. I hope every person this notice reaches will make inquiry for the prisoners; and if by treaty, purchase or otherwise, my daughter is recovered from the hands of the savages, no sums of money that they may cost shall ever be regretted by me, but cheerfully paid to any person who may purchase her or have trouble in maintaining her until I can receive information.

Chapter 34
Several forts had at this time been established near the present location of Springfield, Robertson County. In February or March an attack was made upon these by a party of Creeks. John TITSWORTH, Thomas REASON and wife and Mrs. ROBERTS were slain. Also the entire family of Col. Isaac TITSWORTH except himself and an older daughter. Colonel TITSWORTH was absent from home and his daughter was carried away captive. The house in which the family resided was burned. Miss TITSWORTH and other captives were kept in the Creek camp near the mouth of the Tennessee until the first of June. They were then carried south into the Creek nation, where Miss TITSWORTH remained for three years. For a long time she was supposed to be dead, but in the summer of 1795 Colonel TITSWORTH, hearing that she was probably yet alive, journeyed through the Creek nation in search of her. Finally locating the rendezvous of her captors, he opened negotiations with them and arranged for her release by an exchange of prisoners. In retiring from the attack on the Springfield station the Indians discovering that they were being pursued, tomahawked and scalped three children they were carrying also into captivity.
In 1789 a Montgomery County Court was assembled at the home of Isaac Titsworth on Parson’s Creek in the Port Royal area. Francis Prince chaired the Court and Joseph B. Neville was appointed Sheriff.
Not sure where the following information fits in;
The Titsworth of Logan County published in the Wagon Wheels Publication in October of 1990 by the Logan County Historical Society:
The John T. Titsworth family was the most prominent in the history of the county and the state of Arkansas. John T. was usually referred to in publications as "Jack". He was born in 1802 in Kentucky, probably Livingston County, and was in the Logan County area before 1821; because he, too, signed the memorial treaty with the Choctaw Indians. There were other indications of earlier arrival here, including land acquisition.
On 5 December 1827 he married in Crawford County (this section of Logan was then part of Crawford) Mrs. Adalissa Quinn (nee Adalissa Clark), and they had at least nine children. Five of these lived to maturity: William C. (b.1828); John Randolph (b. 1831); Narcissa Ada (b. 1836); Almon (b. 1838); and Edwin Newton (b. 1839). However, William was only twenty-one when he died on 4 May 1849. The remaining two children of John (Jack) Titsworth: son Almon, born 15 May 1838, and son Edwin Newton ("Newt"), born 3 October 1839, did not marry. They each had large holdings of the Jack Titsworth estate and managed these throughout their lives. They lived in separate domiciles until after 1870 when the older brother Almon moved into the household with Newt. Almon died in Roseville 20 November 1885 and is buried in the Titsworth Cemetery. He left most of his estate to his brother Newt, who died four years later (21 May 1889) and is also buried in the Titsworth Cemetery. As a result of a civl suit regarding Newt's estate(6) (valued at $100,000 and a number of properties), the remaining fortune of John (Jack) Titsworth (who had died some thirty years earlier) was divided between his surviving daughter "Sis" Titsworth O'Kane and the surviving heirs of his son Randolph -- Edward Titsworth, Ada Titsworth Vanhooser and Ella Titsworth Stroup

Notes from Georgia Mayne [email protected] 10/97:
There may be an error in her listed death date or her husband had a second wife. The last three children (David, Spear and John) all have birth dates that are after her listed death date. (7)
She was Killed by Indians. (7)
Children of Col. Titsworth and Unknown are:

Notes for Abraham Titsworth:
In May of 1806 Elizabeth BADGLEY STARR TITSWORTH and her husband Abraham TITSWORTH set out to travel by pirogue canoe on the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers from southern Illinois to the TITSWORTH home in Arkansas. According to the account given in a late 19th century Illinois history, the couple was forced to put in at a military base called Post Arkansas, where Elizabeth gave birth to their child and Abraham TITSWORTH died. She was subsequently rescued by family members whom she managed to contact.

1798,June 20th---------Sells land ROBERTSON CO. TN. to John Fort
It appears they were maybe a day away from their Robertson County farm (on they're way to Kentucky) when the massacre occurred. Miller Creek is 10 miles from Massacre site. It seems to me the most logical thing to do, was go back to his farm. Familiar home and neighbors. From there he could search for Margaret. He DID NOT sell this land until June 1798 to John Fort.

****Description - An area rich in history, 26-acre Port Royal is the site of one of Tennessee's earliest communities and trading centers. It was an important site on the route to the West. An old Indian trail that led to the Ohio River had evolved into a major stagecoach route during the early 1800's and had crossed the Red River at Port Royal. This is the route taken by the Cherokee Indians during their removal in 1837-38 known as the Trail of Tears. Diary records of the removal mentioned Port Royal as an encampment site where the Cherokee stayed overnight or longer to resupply, grind corn, and rest.
Port Royal is located approximately 12 miles southeast of downtown Clarksville, Tennessee, off Hwy. 76. Isaac's place was 2.5 miles South of there.

Marshall Duncan was on Horse Creek, Sullivan Co. TN, by 1783 next to Thomas Titsworth Sr. ("Marshall Duncan's branch" in Sullivan Co. Deed Book 1, pg. 1), whose land also adjoined ISAAC TITSWORTH; in 1789 ISAAC TITSWORTH sold one parcel of land on the Fall Branch of Horse Creek which was on Charles Duncans (10.1.) orphans line (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 385).
This may be the Robert Duncan whose orphaned son Charles was granted land 24 Oct. 1782 on the south fork of Horse Creek next to land of ISAAC TITSWORTH in Sullivan Co. TN (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 17).

Notes for Willem Abrahamse Tietsoort:
William Tietsoort was the first settler in the region to which they were moving. He had preceded the Kuykendalls about six years, having gone in there about 1694. Previous to that he had been living in Schenectady, a few miks out from Fort Orange, the childhood home of Luur's father. While Tietsoort was living there, the Indians attacked and burned Schenectady and he fled from there down to Esopus, (Kingston), where his brother Abram lived. The Indians in the Minisink country were friendly with the whites at that time and invited the blacksmith Tietsoort to go to their country and start a blacksmith shop.
He made his home there and the Indians deeded him a tract of land, the title of which they never afterwards disputed.

Name: Col. Isaac TITSWORTH
Sex: M
Birth: 19 OCT 1746 in Somerset Co., New Jersey
Death: 1 FEB 1832 in Short Mountain, Logan Co., AR
Note:
Col. Isaac Titsworth wrote a letter to the Knoxville, (TN) Gazette on Jan. 9, 1795 describing the Indian massacre in which his daughter Margaret (called Peggy) was abducted by the Indians--he says "The Indians made off with a daughter of mine about 13 years of age named Peggy." He says in the same letter that the Indians also "killed and scalped one of my children and wounded and scalped nother one of mine..." He does not name the latter two children. I don't know if this was the same encounter in which his wife was also killed by Indians.
Col. Isaac Titsworth finally settled around Short Mountain, near what today is Paris, Logan Co., AR. When he died he was buried at the base of Short Mountain. In recent years his remains were exhumed and transferred to a local cemetery in Paris, AR. Where his remains were reinterred is an historical marker commemorating his pioneer spirit.
