Ambrose Tipsword,Tipsord was my great grandfather,His father, Thomas Tipsword was accidently shot in 1858 near the waters of Pottawatamie inKansas (Teritory) by William Lambert while out hunting. Lambert swore that the gun accidently went off, when, what looks like he was startled by Turkey. It is very hard to read. The story about WA Tipsord (skyways) seems to be about Thomas Soward Tipsword, .The article was appparently also in error when it stated that Thomas died instantly, because Lambert also stated that when he went over to where Thomas was on the ground, he was still alive, he told Thomas that he had accidently shot him and probably killed him and asked Thomas for his forgiveness and Thomas asked Lambert to pray for him and soon died. Elizabeth stated that Lambert was very much affected when he came to tell herthat he had killed Thomas and she never heard Thomas Tipsowrd and William Lambert have any dispute or any difference in her life and believes they were on good and friendly terms, this was also testified to by the men that had gone to the scene with Lambert after the accident. Thomas left Elizabeth and their son Ambrose who later was under the guardianship of Henry Buchtel, Buchtell, Bucktell,or Buchtle who married his mother Elizabeth January 16, 1859.In the papers regarding the estate and the death, Elizabeth is refered to as wife, widow, Mistress Tipsword, and on one paper Elizabeth____________.when discussing the estate of Thomas it is noted that Thomas hada wife and 8 children living in Effingham county, ILL. I have not seen any mention of the oldest son yet. The article on (skyways)puts the date at May 10 of 1858, but, at the close of the inquest it was found by the jury that Tipsowrd came to his(deth) by accident, Lambertwas found innocent and penitant on the second day of February 1858.The court papers dealing with the estateare dated between June and September of '58 and the guardianship of Ambrose Tipsword Sept. 1860. It looks like Thomas did not spell his name with a w or without, there are copies of 2 notes or checks on which the clerk spelled Thomas Tipsord and Thomas made his mark(X)..These notes were made out on January 22, 1858 in Kansas City, K.T and put in evidence in settling his estate..Most of the papers do spell Tipword with a w although some of the dif. clerks spell it as it sounds without the w while the clerk at the inquest spelled it Tipsowrd.
